Middle age comes with it’s problems, not only do we have the menopause madness, expanding waistlines, and greying hair (if we didn’t have it before now) but, in my case, broken nails that won’t grow again.
I loved my nails, I would spend such a long time shaping and painting them, then the menopause came and with it, my nails went. For me, that was just a step too far, so I decided to fake it. but I didn’t want to go and get it done professionally… for a few reasons.
- It can be quite expensive.
- It’s bad enough sitting in the hairdressers for hours on end getting the old barnet dyed, without sitting waiting on your nails to dry and having to talk incessant rubbish to someone – BORING!!!
- I actually enjoy doing my nails, taking my time to choose the colour I want, with no pressure, some music on and a wee cheeky glass of wine.
Here’s how …..

- My opaque nails are purchased from Amazon and under £10. I have been using this brand since Lockdown. You get 600 full cover nails, they are sized 1-10 and in individual bags (saves rummaging through loads of them, only to find that the size you are looking for isn’t there). They come with nail glue but I prefer this NAILBOND glue, also from Amazon ,as it has a brush, is less messy and you don’t get your fingers stuck together!!!!
- Nail polish, I mostly buy from TKMAXX, what’s not to love about a good old rummage in their make up box and, an added bonus, you can pick up some really good brands, at great prices. This OPI rrp’s at about £14, I got it for £3.99, admittedly some of the colours they have are a bit on the NEON side but it’s well worth a look if you are ever instore.
- My topcoat is Sally Hansen insta dry, dries quickly and gives the most amazing shine. Nails look as if they have gel polish on them. Love it. I buy that on Amazon too, on a 2 monthly subscription.
- Lastly, don’t panic about having to rip these nails off when they are growing out. I use Mylee 100% pure acetone remover, just put some on a cotton pad, add a bit of pressure to the nail and it dissolves . TADA. .

So, if like me you don’t fancy sitting in a nail salon every 2 weeks, why not try some DIY.
