After over 2 years of a pandemic and lockdowns, we can finally try and get back to some semblance of normality (whatever that may be) and get ourselves back out there.
Prior to the pandemic I was a gym addict, carefully watching what I was eating, weighing myself daily, some days about 5 times a day. I had a set weight (in my head) that I would not allow myself to go above and stuck to it, rigidly. Safe to say, I was a bit obsessive.
Now, like so may of us, I have put things into perspective. Life is way too short to count every calorie and deprive myself of nice meals and nights out just because I am scared to put on a pound or two.
Having gained weight during Lockdown (most of us have), I am now adapting my wardrobe to suit, as the extra pounds are not for coming off, they seem very content here, (they are not even paying rent for the pleasure either!!!!!). One of the things I have missed wearing, are my jeans ( the saddlebags wont allow them anywhere near me). Thankfully , someone has had the foresight to make 2022 the year of the ‘looser’ jean, whereby ditching the ‘skinny’ jean. They are sooooo 2/3 ears ago now!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whilst I have copious pairs of skinny jeans, in every imaginable colour, this new jean phase is a great get out of jail for me, I no longer need to admit to myself or anyone else for that matter, that I have put weight on and that my ‘skinnies’ no longer fit, I can just be ‘on trend’.
So, what’s on offer you ask? Well, have patience , I am about to tell you…..
- Loose jeans, MOM, DAD, BOYFRIEND, BALLOON
- Straight leg, CIGARETTE, BOOTCUT
- Wide leg and Flares
Now, you may be wondering what style of jean to opt for, given your body shape – I CAN HELP WITH THAT……

For the apple figure – you don’t want anything clinging to the stomach, bum or thighs, which is difficult as jeans are traditionally tight around this area, however if you stick to tailored or wide-legged, this should balance out the heaviness around this area.
For the pear figure – wear something that offsets the wideness of hips and thighs, bootcut or flare are great , something that is a straight leg fit, widens just below the knee and is a fuller shape at the bottom, this provides balance for pear proportions.
For the hourglass figure – high rise jeans, these highlight the waist and showcase the legs. Opt for bootcut, straight leg or cropped (dependant on height), ideally in a stretch denim.
For the petite – you want to create the illusion of height, (maybe you don’t), but mid rise and flare are a good combination as they create a vertical line, high rise will elongate the leg and a darker jean is a good option if available.
I wouldn’t normally be an advocate for Marks and Spencer, however for a one-stop shop for jeans, they are my ‘go to’ . They have every style and colour, size, length and the prices are pretty decent too, plus, in my case, they actually fit # hoorah.
Here’s some examples of what they have right now……………………..

However, if, like me, you do actually want to keep the ‘skinnies’, (just in case, by some Harry Potter type spell, they might one day fit again), you can still wear them, even if, in theory they are really not the best fit for your body shape.
Apple – well, aren’t you the lucky ones??? You and petite are the only body types to truly suit these jeans, in your case due to the slimness of your legs. Wear them to just above the ankle to flash those slim ankles too.
Pear – A long, flowing top, cinched in at the waist or a button down shirt with a fitted jumper on top.
Hourglass – An oversized blazer or asymmetric dress, something to balance proportions.
Petite – Just tuck a sweater in, especially if the jeans are high waisted, this will give the illusion of longer legs.
